* CL 65 AMG and CLK 63 AMG Black Series: World premiere for two special AMG high-performance automobiles
* At the leading edge for 40 years: Mercedes-AMG

New York With the CL 65 AMG and the CLK 63 AMG Black Series, Mercedes-Benz presents two very special high-performance automobiles.

The new top of the line model, the CL 65 AMG, with its powerful V12 bi-turbo engine delivering 450 kW and 1000 Newton meters of torque, brings driving dynamics to the highest level. Additionally available and limited to 40 units is the 40th Anniversary Edition with exclusive AMG Alubeam paintwork, and which marks a special event: AMG, the high-performance brand of the Mercedes Car Group (MCG) celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2007.

The new CLK 63 AMG Black Series represents a transition from motor sport into pure culture. The fast V8 coupe is visually and technologically closely related to the Official F1 Safety Car. With its sophisticated cooling and new AMG threaded sport suspension, this two-seater, with 373 kW, is predestined for hard campaigning on the racing circuit.

After the S 65 AMG and the SL 65 AMG, the new CL 65 AMG is the third AMG model to use the famously powerful AMG 6.0 litre V12 bi-turbo engine. This exclusive sports coup posts outstanding performance: 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds, and 200 km/h after just 13.3 seconds. The high-torque engine stands out with its characteristically smooth AMG V12 sound.

The standard equipment in the new CL 65 AMG includes not only AMG styling, a distinctive AMG interior, the PRE SAFE occupant protection system and 20-inch AMG forged wheels, but also the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control, and the AMG high-performance brake system with dual-frame floating calliper disc brakes.

An even more exclusive equipment version is offered by the limited-edition 40th Anniversary making its appearance to mark AMGs 40 years of operation. This special CL 65 AMG is the first Mercedes-Benz production vehicle to be finished in AMG Alubeam. With this unique paint finish, the colour has the appearance of liquid metal and ingenious light reflections make it appear even more vibrant.

Inside, the CL 65 AMG 40th Anniversary is dynamically accented by two-tone all nappa-leather upholstery in a diamond pattern and by carbon trim highlights.

CLK 63 AMG Black Series: Close Kinship with the Official F1 Safety Car

The CLK 63 AMG Black Series has other strengths although it, like the limited CL 65 AMG 40th Anniversary, was developed in the AMG PERFORMANCE STUDIO. This fast, two-seater V8 coupe is both technically and visually related to the Official F1 Safety Car. The AMG 6.3-litre V8, its performance boosted to 373 kW, can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds accompanied by a powerful V8 note from the new AMG sports exhaust system. Optimized for the racing circuit, the coup features sophisticated cooling design measures that give it maximum stamina no matter how hard it is driven.

There is nothing second-rate about this cars power transmission, suspension and brakes: the modified AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC with its shorter rear-axle ratio ensures even greater agility in all speed ranges. The suspension setup can be personalized with the new AMG threaded sports suspension to alter the suspension level; the rear-axle differential lock provides optimum traction, and the AMG high-performance brake system, with larger composite-technology discs on the front axle, delivers impressive deceleration values. Amazing cornering speeds are guaranteed by the standard tires in size 265/30 R 19 (front) and 285/30 R 19 (rear), which are mounted on particularly light 19-inch AMG forged rims.

Pure Racing: Exterior and Interior of the CLK 63 AMG Black Series

Visually, too, the CLK 63 AMG Black Series shows its close kinship with the Official F1 Safety Car. A new front apron with large cooling intakes and lateral carbon fibre outlets, flared wheel arches, and a rear apron with diffuser fins and active rear-axle cooling, point unmistakably to the transfer of technology from motor sport, which has been Mercedes-AMGs corporate philosophy for 40 years now. Inside the car, the uncompromised line continues. AMG sports seats, an AMG performance sports steering wheel with an oval rim and 365-millimeter diameter, and carbon-fibre trim on the centre console, the AMG instrument cluster and the doors, all create the functional atmosphere of a genuine racing car.

New X-TRAIL: Unveiled at 2007 Geneva Motor Show

Being given its public debut at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, the new X-TRAIL goes on sale across Europe in their summer.

The new X-TRAIL will make its Australian debut at the 2007 Australian International Motor Show where pricing and specifications will also be announced. Australian versions will be available with an updated version of the existing 2.5-litre petrol engine and will go on sale in late 2007.

It offers more interior space than before, greater comfort and refinement, more equipment and, thanks to three new engine options, better performance, economy and reduced emissions. Passenger and pedestrian safety has been enhanced while the new X-TRAIL has more practical and user-friendly features.

New from the ground up, the latest X-TRAIL shares the same platform as the recently launched Nissan Qashqai. The platform features strut-type suspension at the front with a multi-link system at the rear, both ends being mounted on separate rubber insulated sub-frames providing enhanced refinement and isolation from vibrations.

As a result, new X-TRAIL is slightly larger than before: its wheelbase has increased by 5mm to 2630mm, while overall length has risen by 175mm to 4630mm. Much of this extra length can be found in the trunk area, which has increased dramatically in size – up almost 50 per cent on the exisiting model.

The approach and departure angles of 28 and 23 degrees respectively and a generous 200mm ground clearance enable the X-TRAIL to traverse difficult terrain with comparative ease. It can safely stake its place in Nissan’s 4x4 range alongside such iconic vehicles as Patrol and its big brother, the Pathfinder.

Next generation ALL MODE

At the heart of X-TRAIL’s 4x4 armoury is the latest ‘intelligent’ version of Nissan’s highly regarded ALL MODE electronic all-wheel drive system. In addition, X-TRAIL boasts a range of petrol and diesel engines all developing strong levels of torque making them perfectly suited to the low speed controllability needed off-road.

A simple to operate system, ALL MODE 4x4-i has a rotary knob on the centre console offering a choice between two-wheel drive or Auto mode. Auto is regarded as the ‘default’ mode: when driving at speeds of up to 80 km/h, the system constantly monitors throttle opening, engine speed and torque to anticipate wheel spin and to distribute torque between front and rear axles as needed. Above that speed, the system reacts to wheelspin, again shifting drive rearwards to restore traction as required.

Lock operates at speeds of up to 40km/h and is automatically over-ridden each time the engine is re-started.

Among the other highlights of ALL MODE 4x4-i are DDS and USS, standing for Downhill Drive Support and Uphill Start Support. USS is a fully automatic system that activates on any slope that exceeds a 10 per cent incline, holding the vehicle on the brakes until the driver starts to move away. The system also works if the vehicle is reversing up an incline.

DDS – operated via a switch on the centre console – operates when ALL MODE is in lock mode. DDS uses the anti-lock brakes to maintain a descent speed of 7km/h. allowing the driver to concentrate on steering. Like USS, DDS also works when the vehicle is in reverse.

Three new engines

New X-TRAIL has a wider range of engines than its predecessor, with two petrol and two diesel options being offered: only one engine – a 2.5-litre 16 valve four-cylinder petrol unit – has been carried over.

Although carried over from the original, the 2.5-litre petrol engine has been further improved for greater refinement and better efficiency. Providing best-in-class low- to mid-range torque figures the engine has proven extremely popular for towing.

All new evolutionary design
Although X-TRAIL has been completely restyled, customer research clearly showed that the robust, strong shape was popular and well appreciated. Indeed, it was a key factor in the decision making process for many buyers. It was clear that the
“X-TRAILness” had to be retained, which is why there is a clear family resemblance between the original and the new version. Key design cues, such as the solid shoulder line, deep glasshouse and static window line, have been transferred to the newcomer. The squared off appearance gives practical benefits too – with maximised interior space and the feeling of reassurance which is important to many buyers.

Strength is conveyed by the deep D-pillar behind the revised profile of the rearmost side window, by the extended wheel-arches and by the tough grille, which echoes the style found across Nissan’s 4x4 range.

At the back, the one-piece top-hinged tailgate extends deep into the bumper to create a low loading sill, while the high mounted stop lamp has been integrated into the top of the frame itself, rather than being mounted behind the tailgate glass as before.

Premium interior

The interior continues Nissan’s practice of providing much higher levels of quality and premiumness than expected for the class of car. Soft feel materials feature on all touch points, while grained plastics and flocked surfaces in contrasting shades – black and grey or black and sand – are used throughout the cockpit. Depending on the trim level, instrument surrounds and other features are finished in silver or titanium colours to give a technical feel.

And as with other recent Nissan models, X-TRAIL has been created with versatility and practicality uppermost. Positioning the instrument cluster behind the multi-function steering wheel has allowed greater versatility in the centre console, which can now house a larger navigation screen closer to eye level as well as providing space for an in-dash multi disc CD changer.

A large centrally-mounted dash-top storage box is now deep enough to house a full size tissue box or no fewer than 10 CD jewel cases while a vast 15.7-litre glove box has a dedicated section for the owner’s manual.

Larger, more flexible trunk
Perhaps the most versatile aspect of the new X-TRAIL is the trunk, however. With the rear seat in place, the original vehicle had a VDA measurement of 410-litres up to the lower edge of the rear window: in the new X-TRAIL the equivalent figure is
603-litres, an increase of 193-litres.

This has been achieved by rerouting the exhaust silencer from its original transverse position under the boot floor to a north/south location alongside the rear wheel well. This has allowed the creation of an innovative double deck trunk, with space for a sliding drawer under the floor where valuable items can be stored away from prying eyes.

The drawer has partition walls that can be placed in a number of different positions or removed altogether as required. The floor and the drawer can both be removed to increase load space even further: as a result the trunk area of the new X-TRAIL is deeper and wider than the original and, even with the false floor in place, virtually as tall. With it removed, trunk height is increased by 127mm over the original.

But that’s not all. To ensure maximum practicality, the floor has been finished in a tough and easy-to-clean but non-slip plastic surface. Raised ribs have been placed at unequal distances apart to help prevent loads shifting when the vehicle is on the move. Full carpeting was rejected for the trunk as customer research showed that many owners either carried dogs or outdoor sports equipment in the rear of their
X-TRAIL and preferred a wipe clean surface.

As before, the rear seat backrests recline through 7 degrees for maximum passenger comfort, and also fold flat to increase load space. But rather than a conventional 60/40 split fold, the new X-TRAIL has 40/20/40 folding system, again to increase flexibility.

Nissan¹s current model X-TRAIL has been a great success in Australia and as recently as February 2007, was the market leader in its segment. In the 2005 and 2006, Nissan Australia sold 12,702 and 11,331 X-TRAILs respectively.

Performance and Responsibility: Saab Adds BioPower to Entire 9-3 Range

Saab’s successful BioPower concept – combining increased performance and reduced fossil CO2 emissions – will be rolled out across the 9-3 range, including Sport Sedan, SportCombi and Convertible.

The launch of these models, unveiled at Geneva, reinforces Saab’s leadership in the emerging flex-fuel segment, where the Swedish premium brand will now offer ‘eco-friendly’ variants of all its core products.

The Saab 9-5 BioPower is already Europe’s best selling flex-fuel vehicle and the addition of BioPower to the 9-3 range will significantly broaden customer choice. The 9-3 BioPower Convertible becomes the only premium soft-top on the market to offer open-top motoring with eco-friendly performance.

“The success of the 9-5 BioPower has encouraged us to extend this concept to the 9-3 range,” says Jan Åke Jonsson, Saab Automobile’s Managing Director. “This means we can now offer BioPower variants throughout our core product line-up.”

Saab 9-3 BioPower models, in Linear and Vector specification with manual or automatic transmission, go on sale with immediate effect in Nordic markets, the UK and Ireland. Sales in other European markets will commence later this year.

Enhanced Performance
By using turbocharging, Saab BioPower is the only flex-fuel technology on the market that offers the enjoyment of ‘greener’ motoring, together with more engine power and performance.

Running on E85 fuel (85 per cent bioethanol/15 per cent petrol), the new 2.0-litre 9-3 BioPower engine delivers 17 per cent more maximum power (175 hp/129 kW v 150 hp/111 kW) and 10 per cent more torque (265 v 240 Nm).

In the 9-3 Sport Sedan, that translates to projected zero to 100 km/hour acceleration in 8.4 sec and 80 to 120 km/hour in fifth gear in 13.9 sec, compared to 9.5 sec and 15.0 sec, respectively, on petrol.

E85 has a higher octane rating (104 RON) than petrol (95 RON), and turbocharging with Saab BioPower allows the use of a higher boost pressure and more advanced ignition timing than is possible with petrol. This gives more engine power, without risk of harmful 'knocking' or pre-detonation. In contrast, a naturally-aspirated flex-fuel engine has only a fixed compression ratio and cannot realize the true performance potential of bioethanol fuel.

Saab’s 32-bit Trionic 8 engine management system controls the throttle setting, ignition timing, fuel injection, air mass and turbo boost pressure. It is a powerful platform that has facilitated software re-programming to accommodate the different ignition timing and fuel/air mixture requirements of E85. The only hardware modifications necessary to the all-aluminium Saab 9-3 engine are the fitment of more durable valves and valve seats. Bioethanol-compatible materials are also used in the fuel system, including the tank, pump, lines and connectors.

Trionic monitors fuel quality after every visit to the filling station and automatically makes any adjustments necessary for running on E85 and/or petrol in any combination. That means Saab BioPower drivers can also use petrol, should E85 not be available.

Bioethanol fuel is produced from a wide range of agricultural crops and biomass. Unlike petrol, its consumption does not significantly raise atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main ‘greenhouse’ gas that contributes to climate change. This is because emissions during driving are balanced by the amount of CO2 that is removed from the atmosphere when crops for conversion are grown. Bioethanol is sold in Sweden, and a growing number of other European markets, as E85 fuel.

BioPower Success
The extension of BioPower demonstrates Saab’s commitment to exploiting the potential of bioethanol as a sustainable and renewable fuel for road transport. And the commercial success of Saab’s current 9-5 BioPower models - now available with 2.3-litre and 2.0-litre turbo engines – also demonstrates its attraction in providing enhanced performance, together with greater environmental responsibility.

The EU is committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions and a directive currently requires member states to ensure bio-fuels account for an increasing proportion of energy needs in the road transport sector, with a target of 5.75 per cent by 2010. A further directive on energy taxation also calls on member states to apply reduced taxation, or a complete exemption, for bio-fuels in pure or low blends.

In Sweden, where the Saab 9-5 BioPower is the top selling environmentally-friendly vehicle, a growing network of more than 650 E85 fuel pumps is already established and a total of 800 pumps, covering 25 per cent of the country’s filling stations, is targeted by the end of 2008.

Other European countries are now following Sweden’s lead. E85 has already entered the market in Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Switzerland, Holland and Belgium, with other countries expected to follow.

And in France, the government has targeted the establishment of 500 pumps this year throughout the country. With increasing E85 availability in the United States, bioethanol is now established as the world’s fastest growing alternative fuel.

Jan Åke Jonsson concludes: “We believe Saab BioPower represents an attractive and practical step forward in helping to meet the environmental challenges that now confront us. Saab is delighted to be leading growth in the flex-fuel segment and we are committed to giving our customers the opportunity to enjoy greener motoring. We look forward to the substantial development of distribution infrastructures in Europe that will extend this opportunity to more drivers.”

MINI Announces a New Model

The world’s most successful small car premium brand will boost its appeal even further with the European launch of an all-new model before the end of the year.

The new MINI Clubman is developed from the MINI Concept Geneva revealed one year ago in Switzerland.

Just 12 months later MINI is not only naming the new production car but it is also announcing the goal of increasing sales from the record number of 200,000 units in 2005, to a figure beyond this tally for the year, thanks to the successful launch of the 2007 New MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S models.

In Europe, where MINI sells the majority of its models, the new MINI One and MINI Cooper D will join the New MINI hardtops and the MINI Cabrio, before the MINI Clubman arrives.

The MINI Clubman is described as a Shooting Brake concept, a body designation that refers to a coupe-style two-door car that has an elongated rear. The MINI Concept Geneva was subtly modified to suit three further major International Motor Shows, Frankfurt, Tokyo and Detroit, reflecting the expected world-wide appeal of the new model.

The five-year old MINI brand is accelerating in popularity so the Plant Oxford production facility was expanded in mid-2006 to allow for growth beyond the already extended 200,000 cars a year capacity.

The 2006 modifications to the plant will eventually allow for a 20 percent capacity increase. This move to increase capacity underlines the BMW Group’s confidence in the on-going success of the MINI brand.

“We assume that the MINI brand will become even more important for the BMW Group’s retail volume,” Dr Michael Ganal, Member of the Board of Management for BMW Group said, speaking at the MINI stand at the Geneva Motor Show, yesterday.

“Last year, MINI accounted for almost 14 per cent of the Group’s automotive retail volume. In its home market Great Britain, the share was even more than 24 per cent.

“We expect to reach a new MINI retail record for the overall year 2007. So, in other words, we are going to outperform our 2005 record of over 200,000 vehicles.

“In the first two months of this year, we have delivered almost 26,000 MINI vehicles to customers worldwide.

“It is our goal to achieve a retail volume of over 240,000 units in the medium term. We will meet this goal, among other things, by launching attractive new products. A further driver of retail growth will be another MINI model.

“We already gave you a foretaste exactly one year ago when I presented the MINI Concept Geneva here at the Geneva Motor Show. This MINI Shooting Brake has meanwhile been developed to series production maturity. So again, we have managed to successfully interpret an authentic MINI concept. The new member of the MINI product family will be launched before the end of the year as the MINI Clubman. Yesterday, we let the MINI Clubman off the leash for a short time so that it could get used to life on the road.

“The MINI Clubman will share all the characteristic genes of the new MINI generation as regards authenticity, design and go-kart feeling. So it is an unmistakable MINI and at the same time a stand-alone, unique concept sporting specific attributes and typical MINI solutions,” Dr Ganal said.

BMW M GmbH has revealed an impression of the next generation M3 Coupé at the 77th Geneva Motor Show in the guise of a stunning Concept Car.

The BMW M3 Concept Car features a high-revving V8 engine that is anticipated for the series car once it goes into production.

The M3 Concept Car gives an indication of what to expect when the production version of the E92 generation M3 Coupé is released.

Bred on the race track for the road, the M3 Coupé has been an icon for more than 20 years.

The new BMW M3 Concept car is based on the just introduced BMW 3 Series Coupé (which has been critically acclaimed around the world, notably in Twin Turbo 335i guise).

For the M3 Concept car, most body panels have been recreated to suit the high-performance prescription that has invigorated driving enthusiasts for more than 20 years. The secret to any M3 is its successful combination of every day driving machine with race track weapon.

The much anticipated Geneva show car is finished in BMW M’s traditional concept paint finish “Chrome Shadow”.

While the new BMW M3 shares the overall silhouette of the 3 Series Coupé, only the doors, boot lid and head and tail lamps are carried over without alteration in the M3 Concept Car’s body.

All other components were specially engineered for the BMW M3 Concept Car. It features unique exterior aesthetics that accentuate its superior power.

The most notable change to the body is the bulging bonnet now made of weight-saving aluminium, complete with an enhanced and unmistakable powerdome, flanked by large air vents.

The V8 engine featured in the M3 Concept Car devours air at a faster rate than the previous straight six-cylinder engine, so the front apron is dominated by three extra-large air intakes.

Along the flanks, the front guards host the now traditional M gills complete with indicator repeaters and M3 badge, while side skirts re-emphasise the M3 Coupé’s powerful stance and high-performance purpose.

The muscular front wheel arches of the BMW M3 Concept Car symbolise the high level of agility and driving stability achieved by this vehicle.

Together with the forged 19-inch light alloy rims in the classic Y-spoke design, they emphasise the vehicle’s wide track, while a glance through the spokes of the rims reveals the compound high performance brakes developed exclusively for M vehicles.

Specially designed exterior mirrors feature a black double foot reminiscent of an aircraft wing. The mirrors contribute positively to enhanced stability at high speed, thanks to detailed wind-tunnel optimisation.

From any angle, the rear of the car draws the eye to the large rear wheel and muscular haunches, underlining the fact that power is delivered to the road via the rear wheels.

A typically discreet boot lip spoiler is designed to reduce lift at speed, keeping the rear wheels firmly on the ground.

The contours of the diffuser, whose design is subdivided by modelled struts, mirror the shape of the air intakes at the front. The diffuser and the now-trademark M GmbH double exhaust tailpipes leave observers in no doubt as to the monstrous performance within.

The M3 Concept Car is fitted as standard with an advanced technology carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof panel, as introduced on the limited edition E46 generation M3 CSL, and also used on the production M6 Coupé.

In addition to helping to lower the centre of gravity and thus improve agility and handling control, the Formula 1-developed CFRP saves overall weight and is left unpainted, with the finely structured surface coated only with a layer of clear finish.

When viewed side-on, the roof edges appear flatter, so lowering the perceived body height. The CFRP roof is a perfect example of how interlinking technical innovation with an individual design strategy was central to the development of the BMW M3 Concept Car.

The BMW M3 Concept Car is a vision that shows where striving for the ultimate driving experience will take us in the future.

“The BMW M3 represents the cutting edge of BMW driving superiority, and the Concept revealed at the Geneva Motor Show is more than a hint of what we can expect to be driving very soon,” said Guenther Seemann, BMW Group Australia Managing Director.

“The new high-revving V8 engine, extra-sleek body styling and the high-technology CFRP roof are the highlights of what will be a scintillating driver’s package.

“The M3 Coupé has driven its way into the hearts of all hard-core driving enthusiasts around the world and in Australia the previous generation sold in excess of 1,500 examples, underlining its broad appeal in a market segment it created.”

New Mazda2

Mazda2, the first Zoom-Zoom choice

Eye-catching and dynamic design

Superior fuel economy through lightness and compactness

Zoom-Zoom ― Mazda began using this expression with the launch of its first new-generation model, the Mazda6, in 2002. It expresses the love of motion and is used by children to imitate the sound of an engine. And it has always been more than merely a brand slogan. It describes Mazda’s ultimate goal: to provide customers, who never forgot the love of motion they felt in childhood, with an exhilarating driving experience.

Now, Mazda is unveiling the all-new Mazda2 at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. The new Mazda2 is not just a model change from the current Mazda2 but the first of Mazda’s new-generation lineup to evolve to the next stage. It reflects not only the Zoom-Zoom passion but also a range of capabilities refined in a severely competitive environment using customer feedback from around the globe. The aim was to further refine Mazda’s DNA — Distinctive Design, Exceptional Functionality, and Responsive Handling and Performance — while enhancing driving quality in terms of attributes such as ride comfort and quietness and meeting global environmental and safety performance standards. The all-new Mazda2 represents an evolution of Zoom-Zoom. With this new model, Mazda aims at strengthening the Mazda brand and further expanding its presence in the global B-car segment, especially in Europe, where the segment has grown by around 10% in the last six years and where more than one car in four is a B-car.

In developing the new Mazda2, Mazda took a fresh look at the global compact-car market environment, where there is intense competition among many diverse vehicles, and worked to identify the truly important attributes for a global B-car. These attributes include superior fuel efficiency, which is crucial for low running costs and reduction of CO2 emissions; easy-to-drive functionality and operability; Mazda’s unique dynamic performance, which delivers enjoyable, comfortable driving; and a design that instantly grabs attention. While many other carmakers have enlarged their small cars, Mazda was able to reduce the size of its B-car with the new Mazda2 and still meet the mainstream demands of compact-car customers while enhancing safety.

A Dynamic Design to Attract Customers Worldwide

With the look of the new Mazda2, Mazda’s mission was to embody its next-generation design directions in a way that would appeal to a wide range of people in global markets. Given that customer preferences differ from market to market, Mazda considered various design directions with a view to satisfying all of the diverse expectations. Designers then refined the findings of the study in pursuit of an exquisite and dynamic design with a distinctive Mazda identity. Blending sharp contours with clear expressions of gentleness they created a look that has global appeal.

 Design Concept: Exquisite and Dynamic
With the goal of expressing refined dynamism, the designers further evolved the look of athletic movement that characterizes the Mazda’s DNA. At the same time, they worked to create forms that would convey a sense of precision in line with the Japanese appreciation of simplicity of form and objects that are beautiful because of their simplicity. The key to the new look was a design concept described by the design team as ‘exquisite and dynamic’. Here, ‘exquisite’ denotes the designers’ desire for the design to possess forms that express beauty and a carefully considered dynamism. Designers and modellers carefully considered each line, contour, and other design expression in line with their vision of dynamism, even taking into account the relationship between the car’s exterior look and the space-efficiency of the cabin. This discriminating approach gave the exterior and interior of the new Mazda2 a dynamic character that’s immediately recognizable.

Some of the design elements were first publicly seen in the Mazda SASSOU design concept model that debuted to great acclaim at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show. In line with the positive feedback from Frankfurt, the designers carried them forward and refined them for the production model.

An Exterior Design with Dynamic, Multifaceted Expressions

In line with an exterior design theme of ‘coordinated movements’, the visual movements created by the car’s silhouette, the lines of the body, and the patterns of light on the body were combined to create dynamic, multifaceted expressions not typically seen on a B-car. The resulting exterior design exudes a powerful energy that makes the new Mazda2 look as though it’s about to move even when it’s parked. Expressing dynamic movement within the body’s limited dimensions was a major design challenge. For those looking for an even sportier look, a Sports Appearance Package is available (depending on market). By pursuing beauty in the transitions between each expression of movement and others, however, the design team realized forms that have natural-looking visual movements and convey subtle craftsmanship. The diversity of visual expressions—the body has sharp lines but also conveys softness and gentleness, and it has flowing lines but also conveys a sense of solidity — is a unique attribute yielded by the ‘coordinated movements’ design theme.

An Emotionally Appealing Interior Design Conveying Dynamism and Nimbleness

The interior design theme was ‘a space that communicates movement’. Whereas most B-car cabins have monotonous design treatments with flat surfaces, the interior design team made the new Mazda2’s cabin strikingly different through contoured forms that combine reassuring thickness with strong visual movement. The instrument panel helps to create a sense of space despite the cabin’s compact dimensions; its design creates lateral visual movement from the centre toward the base of the pillar on each side by means of a recess that runs from side to side between the instrument panel’s upper and lower sections. At the same time, the instrument panel’s middle area has a substantial form that communicates a unique character. A contrast between silver accents on a black keynote colour adds further sportiness and individuality to the cabin. Plus, distinctive circular details contribute to a fresh, emotionally appealing look and feel.

Pursuit of Functionality and Operability Required in a B-Car

Most B-car customers want a day-to-day means of getting around and running errands, so it’s vital for a car of this size to be easy to drive and easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces such as car parks. With the new Mazda2, functionality and operability were improved in various ways based on driver-focused ideas and in line with how a B-car is actually used.

 Making the All-New Mazda2 Driver-Friendly for Everyone

The design of the shoulder line, which is angled significantly downward toward the front, is complemented by low mounting points for the door mirrors to afford the driver good downward visibility toward the front and sides. The good visibility makes turning into and driving on narrow roads and looking past the door mirrors to check for pedestrians when turning at junctions all the easier. Furthermore, the new Mazda2 has superior driver-seat adjustability, which is combined with an ergonomic design in which the position of the gear lever is higher for easier shifting.

Ample, Smartly Conceived Storage with No Compromises on Space

When designing the cabin, items young drivers would likely have in their cars were also considered and the interior team redesigned storage spaces such as the glove box and floor console – based on these findings. For instance, the new glove box features a magazine rack that allows users to access travel guidebooks and road atlases without having to open the glove box itself. Also, the floor console between the driver’s seat and front passenger seat has a large rear tray stable enough for storing handbags and other personal items. A 60:40-split rear seat guarantees convenience and luggage space to meet daily needs. There is a total of 250 litres of luggage space.

The Zoom-Zoom Driving Experience that’s Unique to Mazda

Performance that gives the driver confidence is essential for true driving enjoyment. So the new Mazda2 exceeds conventional levels of dynamic performance with agile but stable handling, high body rigidity, strong stopping power, a confidence-inspiring brake feel, and comfort-enhancing quietness. Plus, the new Mazda2 has a comprehensive powertrain lineup that combines superior fuel economy with enjoyment and driveability.

 Environmental Compatibility with Zoom-Zoom Performance
Mazda is serious about improving fuel efficiency as a way to reduce CO2 emissions and other exhaust gases that place a burden on the environment. So the new Mazda2 reflects close attention to minimizing weight as a means of increasing fuel economy. Even before full-fledged development of the car was under way, a special team was devising weight-saving techniques using the latest computer-aided engineering technologies. The team incorporated these techniques into prototype vehicles and conducted evaluations of the resulting low weight on dynamic performance, ultimately achieving significant weight savings together with superior Zoom-Zoom driving enjoyment. Through measures that included body-structure optimization and increased use of high-tensile steel, engineers not only made the new Mazda2 about 100kg lighter than its predecessor, they also achieved major improvements in terms of safety, body rigidity, and noise, vibration, and harshness—all attributes that conventionally mean more weight. With the additional benefits of enhanced powertrain technologies and aerodynamic performance, the new Mazda2 delivers some of the best fuel economy in its segment (up to about 15%* better than that of the previous model <for gasoline models>).

Underpinning the weight-saving technologies in the new Mazda2 is a new platform reflecting Mazda’s expertise in development of small cars.

* Depending on models.

Brisk Handling and a Stable, Quiet Ride

With the new Mazda2’s chassis, engineers pursued superior dynamic performance through brisk, nimble handling, through stability that inspires confidence even at motorway speeds, and through a ride that’s quiet and feels steady but mild. The lightness and rigidity of the body played an important role in maximizing the handling and ride quality. With regard to handling, engineers targeted manoeuvrability and agility on urban roads, brisk, linear steering response and high grip on winding roads, and superior straight-line stability and confidence-inspiring lane-change behaviour on motorways. To help achieve these targets, various grades of high-tensile steel sheeting give the body superior local rigidity. The light, highly rigid body shell also ensures optimal geometry in MacPherson-strut front suspension and H-type torsion-beam rear suspension whatever the driving conditions.

A Powertrain for Lively Performance with High Fuel Efficiency

The new Mazda2 will be launched initially with two petrol engines: the MZR 1.3 DOHC (standard and high-power derivatives depending on market) and MZR 1.5 DOHC. For the European market, a fuel-efficient, clean-running MZ-CD 1.4 diesel engine will be launched a few months later. Each engine combines the superior fuel economy expected in a sub-compact car with a lively performance feel that’s pure Zoom-Zoom.

The 1.3-litre DOHC and 1.5-litre DOHC MZR petrol engines each have a sequential valve timing system and optimized exhaust-valve timing, which together realize superior cylinder-charging efficiency at all engine speeds. The 1.5-litre DOHC engine additionally has a Variable Induction System, which ensures smooth, strong torque delivery throughout the rev range. These technologies ensure highly controllable, linear acceleration and brisk throttle response, so drivers in everyday situations can enjoy the lively engine performance that’s a hallmark of Mazda.

Superb Active and Passive Safety

A fundamental requirement for safety is dynamic performance that allows the driver to confidently control the car in exact accordance with his or her intentions. So the all-new Mazda2 has handling that realizes predictable steering response and superior straight-line stability and a braking system that consistently delivers linear braking force in response to pedal inputs. For customers in Europe and Australia, Dynamic Stability Control is available as an option that further enhances active safety by helping to control side slip. For passive safety in the new Mazda2, an evolution of the unique, high-rigidity, high-safety Mazda Advanced Impact Distribution and Absorption System body structure realizes superior crash resistance by dispersing impact energy throughout the car in the event of an impact from any direction. The body structure is complemented by dual front airbags*1, front side airbags*2, and curtain airbags*2. Also, the bonnet, fenders, and wipers are designed to help minimize injuries in the event of contact with a pedestrian.

*1Standard
*2Optional

Conclusion – small and friendly with plenty of Zoom-Zoom

The all-new Mazda2 is an urban vehicle that’s comfortable and safe to drive, with a strong element of Zoom-Zoom fun thrown in. While being affordable and inexpensive to run with excellent fuel economy, it delivers practically the same level of Zoom-Zoom fun as Mazda’s larger vehicles. It’s a delight to drive, a joy to own, fun to use, and the most personable car in Mazda’s lineup. For the development of this brand-new model, the perspective was broadened from a Japanese to a global viewpoint. Mazda is confident that the Mazda2 will earn the respect of many customers and that it will strengthen and expand the presence of the Mazda brand in sub-compact-car markets. The new Mazda2 will be produced in Japan and available in Australian dealerships by October 2007.

The Audi S5 is an extra sporty offering to complete the new series. A powerful V8 FSI engine gives the S5 a dynamic edge, which underscores its athletically accentuated design. The A5 and S5 are available to order from 6 March 2007 with the first vehicles due for delivery from June.

The Nuvolari quattro concept car of 2003 gave a first taste of Audi’s vision for a powerful and expertly styled coupé with a high performance potential and a progressive, sophisticated design – a bold step into the future.

Many elements from the Nuvolari have been adopted in the Audi A5. The new coupé is a clear and unique statement of sportiness and elegance. At the same time, the A5 offers a driving experience characterised by exhilarating dynamic performance and excellent comfort over long distances.

With a length of 4.63 m, the Audi A5 clearly belongs to a superior class of coupé. Four comfortable seats and a load volume of 455 litres make this car a comfortable long-distance tourer. The dynamic performance is supplied by FSI and TDI engines with rated power ranging from 125 to 195 kW (170 to 265 bhp). All engines share highly eco-friendly and efficient characteristics.

The engines’ power can be transmitted by either front-wheel drive or quattro four-wheel drive and a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. The running gear developed for the A5 is entirely new and combines agile handling with the utmost driving safety.

The design

Quite simply a desirable coupé

For coupé buyers, emotion plays a major role in their choice of car; the most important reason to buy, in the case of a sporty two-door car, is the design. And on that point the Audi A5 genuinely speaks for itself – its design takes Audi’s progressive and stylish design language to new heights. The sporty silhouette, the precisely drawn lines, which gracefully interplay with the powerful surfaces, the expressive front face, and the equally distinctive tail end yield a wholly desirable coupé. “The Audi A5 is the most beautiful car I have ever designed”, says Walter de’Silva, Head of Volkswagen Group Design, with absolute conviction.

Sportiness, elegance and dynamic performance are characteristics common to all of today’s Audi models. Naturally the A5 is particularly rich in these elements of the Audi “genetic code”, and the design makes that immediately clear: the coupé’s proportions, for instance, are characterised by a very wide and low stance, a short front overhang and a long, flowing transition from the C pillar to the tail end.

Lines and surfaces play with light and shadows

An expression of determination characterises the features of the front end: the face bears the hallmark of the new Audi in the form of the single-frame grille, and its right-angled headlights and large air inlets reinforce the architectural impression of breadth in the car’s face-on outline. The same holds true for the rear: the distinct horizontal lines and wide, powerfully styled tail lights, which seem to push outwards, underscore the sporting intent of the A5.

The side line is dominated by the mighty trapezoidal C pillar. This not only emphasises the car’s sporty appeal, but also creates a look reminiscent of the legendary Audi Ur-quattro.

A second stylistic tribute to Audi’s four-wheel drive pioneer model can be found in the marked outline of the wheel arches, with their curving contours drawn into the wide shoulder line. The lines and surfaces of the Audi A5 play with light and shadows, bringing its shape to life and endowing the body with the sculpted intensity that makes Audi design unique.

Audi’s customary devotion to detail is particularly evident in the headlights: their elaborate styling perfectly reflects precision and high-tech engineering. The daytime running lights, comprising a strip of eight LEDs on each side, make the A5’s xenon plus headlights absolutely unmistakeable.

The interior

The luxurious perfection of an Audi

The interior, the interface between person and vehicle, is characterised by ergonomic design and functionality, and equally by the exclusiveness of the materials selected and Audi’s typically superb build quality. An atmosphere in which you feel perfectly at ease, even on long journeys – that is the key feature of the A5 interior.

Making interior design a high-quality tactile experience

The entire cockpit architecture is clearly focused on the driver and brings together the instruments and the centre console to form one unit. The animated shapes, the precision of the workmanship, and the sophisticated design of the controls – these represent a visual delight that is also a joy to touch. The interior design provides a high-quality tactile experience each time you drive the Audi A5. One example of the all-encompassing design approach can be found in the door panel trim, where the controls, inlays, armrest and stowage compartment combine to form one visually harmonious unit.

The instrument panel, with the characteristic droplet-shaped surrounds for the speedometer and rev counter, does feature typical Audi styling elements, but in all its details has been developed as a new design.

The A5 also has the screen of the MMI operating system positioned at an ergonomically perfect high position in the cockpit. A new advanced version of the acclaimed intuitive MMI operating logic makes the wide range of functions easy to understand.

Key with a sharp memory

The new key is another design item that also provides sophisticated functionality. With its soft contours and pleasant surfaces it sits beautifully in the hand. But above all, the innovative key dispenses with the conventional key bit. This is possible because it communicates electronically with the vehicle’s electrical system as soon as it is inserted into the cockpit. It can also store important information, such as the vehicle’s current mileage or warning messages from the Audi A5’s driver information system. The data are always up-to-date and available to allow after-sales staff at a dealership to receive the vehicle for servicing quickly and easily.

The engines

For powerful driving pleasure

A coupé with a distinctly sporty character requires powerful and highly efficient engines. For the Audi A5, power is provided by innovative technologies across the board. All engines supplied for the new model series feature direct fuel injection, for which the petrol engines employ the FSI concept and the diesels are equipped with common rail TDI. This gives all engines a thrilling free-revving character, allowing them to effortlessly unwind their generous torque with optimum energy efficiency. The refined TDI engines with their outstanding sporting talents suit the A5 just as well as the petrol units. Which type to go for is entirely a question of the driver’s personal preference. All of the engines impressively demonstrate that efficiency and driving pleasure are by no means mutually exclusive.

FSI – The high-tech engine with variable valve lift
The top-of-the-range petrol engine in the Audi A5 is a new 3.2-litre FSI with innovative valve gear comprising the Audi valvelift system. This innovation varies the valve lift between two levels. To achieve this, sets of sliding cams are mounted directly on the intake camshafts. These feature two sets of adjacent cam contours for small and large valve lift. Which cam is used to open the intake valves depends on the power demand at any one time.

The effect is an appreciable increase in engine efficiency. The driver benefits from greater power and improved driveability, while enjoying a marked reduction in fuel consumption. At the wheel of an Audi A5 3.2 FSI there is a whole 195 kW (265 bhp) of power output available and a superb torque of 330 Nm in a broad rev band of 3,000 to 5,000 rpm, ensuring blistering acceleration at all times. Within 6.1 seconds the 3.2 FSI quattro with manual six-speed gearbox sprints from 0 to 100 km/h. The top speed is limited to 250 km/h. Despite this thrilling performance potential the car’s fuel consumption is only 8.7 litres per 100 kilometers (3.2 FSI multitronic).

The all-new high-tech four-cylinder unit in the Audi A5 also does full justice to Audi’s reputation for leading engine technology. The 1.8 TFSI, delivering 125 kW (170 bhp), will be available from autumn 2007. It combines turbocharger technology with petrol direct injection and provides a burst of acceleration and pulling power unrivalled in its class from virtually every rev band. Just as it did with its TDI engines, Audi has accomplished a pioneering feat of engineering with its turbocharged petrol units, taking spark-ignition engines to a new dimension in fuel consumption and driveability.

Thanks to a whole raft of technical innovations in the petrol engines, their fuel economy has been significantly improved, thus yielding a marked reduction in CO2 emissions.

TDI – Impressive performance combined with exemplary eco-friendliness
The V6 TDI units from Audi set the standards in their segment. Their copious torque and outstanding fuel economy accompanied by superb refinement mean that they score highly on all counts. In addition to all this, they offer eco-friendly performance that is hard to beat. The TDI engines fitted in the Audi A5, for instance, are equipped with a diesel particulate filter as standard.

The sporty top-of-the-range TDI in the new Audi coupé is the thoroughly revised 3.0-litre engine. It now delivers a power output of 176 kW (240 bhp) and its maximum torque is an immense 500 Nm. But that is not all: with its supreme 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h, the Audi A5 3.0 TDI quattro is one of the sportiest vehicles of its kind. Added to this, it also offers an average fuel consumption of just 7.2 litres per 100 km!

The second TDI engine in the Audi A5 range offers even better fuel economy. The 2.7-litre V6 engine delivers 140 kW (190 bhp) and is an ideal complement to the multitronic gearbox for the comfort-minded coupé driver. Nevertheless, its performance figures are more than impressive: it offers a top speed of
232 km/h with an average fuel economy of 6.7 litres per 100 km. On top of that, its acceleration time of just 7.6 seconds confirms the sporty credentials of this version of the Audi A5.

The Audi A5 2.7 TDI multitronic is equipped with front-wheel drive, while the 3-litre TDI with manual gearbox constantly supplies power to all four wheels. As in numerous other Audi models, the quattro permanent four-wheel drive in the Audi A5 enhances driving dynamics by distributing 40 percent of engine power to the front axle and 60 percent to the rear axle at its basic setting. The system adjusts the power distribution depending on the situation and road surface grip.

Multitronic with eight forward gears and sport mode
In the standard specification, the Audi A5 powertrain features a six-speed manual gearbox with sporty ratios. This gearbox offers uniform short gear lever travel and smooth, easy gear changes.

The continuously variable multitronic automatic gearbox, which offers unparalleled power transmission comfort, is available in conjunction with the
3.2 FSI and the 2.7 TDI engines. At the same time its high efficiency and tall maximum transmission ratio make it very economical on fuel, since it operates in the most efficient range at all times. Whenever the driver prefers a more sporty driving style, the gearbox can be switched to a manual mode with eight set speeds.

The running gear

Precise instruments for agile handling

Even when stationary, the Audi A5 makes a dynamic impression: the wide track, large wheels and short overhangs not only characterise its muscular appearance, they also form part of the formula that produces its peerless active driving feel. The Audi A5 coupé defines the new standard in its class for precise steering response, outstanding directional stability and superb agility, while also offering first-class ride comfort.

The Audi engineers have achieved this with a completely new design of running gear: the front wheels are located by a five-link suspension arrangement with upper and lower wishbones. The wishbones are mounted on a subframe, which is firmly bolted to the body for high rigidity. Another completely reengineered component is the rack and pinion steering. It is located in front of the front axle close to the wheel centre line, and enhances the car’s very agile handling by its direct transmission of the steering forces.

Long wheelbase, short overhang
Overall, the front axle is located a long way forward for a longitudinal engine configuration with front- and four-wheel drive. This new vehicle architecture makes it possible to have a long wheelbase with a short front overhang, and to optimise the axle load distribution. These are all additional elements that enhance the supreme handling qualities of the new Audi A5. To accomplish this special design, the engineers used a trick adopted from the Audi A8: the front axle differential is located in front of the clutch.

A key element of the rear running gear is its trapezoidal-link rear suspension with completely new kinematics. It provides a high degree of ride comfort combined with excellent directional stability. At both the front and rear, the main components of the suspension are made of aluminium. The generous dimensions of the brakes are designed to match the car’s high performance ratings. The braking force can be precisely modulated and the kinematics of the new rear suspension significantly reduce the so-called braking dive effect.

The standard electromechanical parking brake, familiar from the A8 and A6, is activated via a button next to the gear lever. The A5 is also available with the option of Audi hold assist: this ensures that the car cannot accidentally roll back after stopping on a hill.

The body

Generous and superlatively solid

The Audi A5 is nothing if not generous to its driver and passengers. Its generosity begins with its luxurious spaciousness – not just for the front row. On the rear seats, too, the A5 is a full-size touring car. Likewise, with a luggage compartment volume of 455 litres, there is always space left over for a bit of extra shopping, even on a long tour. The loading width of one metre allows easy stowage of large items of luggage, and even well-filled golf bags will fit widthways into the Audi A5 boot. The rear seat folds in two separate sections, and can be released conveniently from the boot.

The extremely high bodyshell rigidity, typical of an Audi, provides the basis both for the car’s crisp handling and its agreeable feeling of solidness and comfort. In the development of the A5 the engineers have successfully combined supreme sporty performance and agility with outstanding vibrational comfort. Its lightweight body construction was achieved using the latest technologies, such as metal plates with varying wall thicknesses (tailored blanks), combined spot welded and bonded joints, and the use of aluminium, for example, in the front wings.

The smooth surfaces of the additional underbody panel enhance the Audi A5’s inherently good aerodynamics. One small but typical example of the extensive high-precision work carried out in the wind tunnel can be seen in the spoilers moulded into the sides of the tail lights.

The equipment

Luxury class high-tech features

Where equipment is concerned, the Audi A5 is characterised by a comprehensive standard specification. This includes 17-inch alloy wheels along with automatic air conditioning, the MMI information and operating system, an audio system with CD player and separate screen, and the automatically opening boot lid. The new comfort key and the electromechanical parking brake are also among the items included in the standard package.

The list of options offers even more luxury class high-tech: Audi adaptive light combines bi-xenon headlights with the dynamic cornering light system and the LED strip of daytime running lights. Keyless access for the doors and boot and keyless engine starting are all features of the advanced key system. The deluxe automatic air conditioning system with three temperature zones allows the passengers to adjust the climate for their individual comfort. The extra-large panoramic tilting roof lends the A5 an especially generous feeling of open space. The Audi parking system advanced features a rearview camera, helping to make tricky parking in cramped multi-storeys easily negotiable.

The infotainment system is a special highlight of the options range. Alongside the navigation system with DVD including MMI, DAB digital radio reception and DVB TV reception, this system also offers pure delight for the ears: the premium sound system for the Audi A5 is supplied by the Danish hi-fi specialist Bang & Olufsen. It comprises 14 speakers, 500 watts of music output, surround sound, active driving noise compensation and, above all, the expertise of a worldwide renowned specialist for high-end audio equipment, making every drive in the Audi A5 a delightful acoustic experience.

Customisation

A made-to-measure coupé

The decision to drive a coupé is always a very emotional one. That makes it all the more important for a coupé to reflect the personal wishes and express the ideas of it owner. If any coupé can fulfil special requests, it is the Audi A5: how about seat side sections in stone blue Valcona leather, accompanied by seat centre sections in star silver leather, with matching interior headlining also in star silver? To go with that, you can add aluminium hologram inlays or maybe rather laurel wood? The customer has the choice: in terms of design variety, the Audi A5 is luxury class in the full sense of the word, with two types of cloth, two leather varieties, the combination of leather and Alcantara, five different inlays and a wide range of interior colour schemes. Above and beyond that, the Audi exclusive programme from quattro GmbH can fulfil virtually every individual wish.

For those looking for an even stronger sporting intent in the A5, the Audi S line offers an extra-dynamic look. The S line exterior package comprises, for example, more distinctive bumpers at the front and rear. The S line sports package includes items such as sports seats, steering wheel and gear lever in perforated leather, black headlining, and special inlays. Even here, there is scope for individual choice between matt aluminium, piano finish black or Vavona wood assam grey. The 18-inch alloy wheels and exclusive paint finishes underscore the look of the S line sports package, while the sports suspension provides a distinct driving feel.

In a league of its own

 The Audi S5

The Audi S5 is a unique competitor among high-performance coupés, thanks to its combination of V8 FSI technology and quattro permanent four-wheel drive. The eight-cylinder engine with its superb power delivery has worthy counterparts in the specially tuned sports suspension and high-performance brakes. Subtle, but clear design elements inside and out serve to distinguish this coupé as a high performance athlete in a league of its own. The Audi S5 goes on sale with the launch of the Audi A5 series.

Engine and running gear

Fascination no figures can express

The figures alone are fascinating enough, but they only hint at the impressive driving experience the S5 offers. The eight-cylinder engine has a rated power output of 260 kW (354 bhp). Its peak torque is 440 Nm, which it already delivers at 3,500 rpm. Within just 5.1 seconds the Audi S5 can sprint to 100 km/h. But no figures can adequately describe the supreme free-revving character, the spontaneous response, the continuous power build-up, or the thrilling sound of this eight-cylinder engine. The V8 naturally derives its enormous power potential from the innovative FSI direct injection technology with high compression and optimum fuel mixture formation.

The six-speed manual gearbox with its very precise guiding of the gear lever and short throw action makes every gear change a pleasure. The quattro permanent four-wheel drive of course provides perfect traction with variable torque distribution from its basic setting of 40 percent to the front and 60 percent to the rear axle. Within a fraction of a second, the dynamic drivetrain system adapts to the current driving conditions and constantly delivers the ideal distribution of drive torque.

The Audi S5’s sports suspension is tuned to enhance the coupé’s performance with particularly dynamic handling. The special high-performance brakes, recognisable by their black painted brake calipers, always ensure precise deceleration. And finally, the ESP electronic stabilisation programme can be deactivated in two stages whenever the driver wishes to exploit the potential of the Audi S5 to the full on a suitable stretch of road.

Design and interiors

Sporty aesthetics with clear functionality

While the design of the Audi A5 forms a balanced synthesis of sportiness and elegance, the Audi S5 displays the more vigorous features of a powerfully built athlete: the radiator grille possesses the specific look of an Audi S model – painted in platinum grey and fitted with vertical chrome inlays. The front and rear bumpers have a more pronounced outline and the air inlet grilles are more striking. The aluminium-look exterior mirror housings make an overtly sporty impression, as do the colour-keyed door sill trim and the dual-branch exhaust system with four oval tailpipes. Nevertheless, the model’s sporty attributes always have a functional aspect: for instance, the more pronounced spoiler in the boot lid yields additional aerodynamic downforce.

However, true strength comes from within and the interior design of the
Audi A5 thoroughly underscores its athletic character. The sports seats, sports steering wheel, instruments with grey dials and aluminium door sill plates provide a dynamic and refined atmosphere. The programme does, of course, provide ample scope to fulfil individual interior design wishes: the inlays are one example – here the choice is between carbon, aluminium, stainless steel or wood. After all, the Audi S5 should perfectly match its owner’s individual ideas and expectations.

Alongside the coupé’s 18-inch wheels with the new S design and 245/40 R 18 tyres, the standard equipment specification for the S5 features items such as xenon plus headlights with impressive daytime running lights in the form of an LED light strip, or sports seats with electronic adjustment.

The New Mercedes-Benz C-Class: Superior Safety, Comfort and Agility

Stuttgart – The unveiling of the stunning new Mercedes-Benz C-Class signals a new era in safety, comfort and agility for drivers. The all-new saloon excels with a multi-faceted product concept which meets the expectations of various customer target groups. With the AVANTGARDE, ELEGANCE and CLASSIC model lines, Mercedes-Benz offers three individual models with an emphasis on comfort and agility whilst delivering the latest in state-of-the-art technology. This includes the newly developed AGILITY CONTROL package with situation-responsive shock absorber control, the Intelligent Light System with five different lighting functions and the PRE-SAFE® preventive occupant protection system. There is a choice of four and six-cylinder engines with up to 13 percent more output than the preceding model, accompanied by an up to six percent improvement in fuel consumption.

With a length of 4581 millimetres, the Saloon is 55 millimetres longer than its predecessor. The body width has increased by 42 mm to 1770 millimetres, and the wheelbase by 45 mm to 2760 millimetres. These dimensions create the conditions for a generously sized interior, and therefore more comfort. For example, the front shoulder room has increased by 40 millimetres.

The design of the new C-Class is based on the modern Mercedes idiom, which reflects the technical superiority of automobiles bearing the star with taut lines and large, tranquil surfaces. The pronounced wedge-shape of the front end serves to emphasise attributes such as agility and performance. For the first time in a Mercedes salon, the radiator grille is used as a distinguishing feature to position the model variants more clearly. Three extended, horizontal louvres and a big centrally positioned Mercedes star characterise the AVANTGARDE model, a traditional design feature of sporty Mercedes models. Together with the sporty, high-quality appointments, this feature emphasises the youthful, agile appearance of this C-Class. This sporty presence can be enhanced even further with the AMG sports package, which includes striking front and rear aprons plus side skirts.

In the ELEGANCE model Mercedes-Benz employs a three-dimensional, louvred radiator grille with a high-gloss paint finish to accentuate other brand-typical attributes such as comfort and luxury. The CLASSIC model in the new C-Class is intentionally more restrained and traditional, but offers the same technical innovations as the other two model variants.

With its outstanding long-distance comfort and its dynamic handling, the C-Class sets new standards in this market segment.

Shock absorbers automatically adapt to the driving situation

AGILITY CONTROL – this is the term used by Mercedes-Benz for all new and further developments that improve both comfort and agility in equal measure. This standard package includes the AGILITY CONTROL suspension, which controls the shock absorber forces according to the driving situation: when driving normally with low shock absorber impulses, the damping forces are automatically reduced for a noticeable improvement in ride comfort – but without any compromise in handling safety. When driving more dynamically, the maximum damping forces are set and the car is effectively stabilised. The AGILITY CONTROL steering of the new C-Class has a ratio of 14.5, and is therefore six percent more direct than the steering of the preceding model. The likewise included AGILITY CONTROL gearshift (manual transmission only) reflects the sporty character of the C-Class with a short travel and precise shifts.

Mercedes-Benz has also developed the ADVANCED AGILITY package with a sporty driving mode, which will become optionally available in Europe from autumn 2007. This offers the driver a choice of two gearshift programmes: Sport and Comfort. Within these programmes the shock absorber for each wheel has infinitely variable electronic control. A newly developed speed-sensitive steering with a more direct ratio, variable centring and adaptation of the accelerator characteristics and automatic transmission shift points is also included in the package.

ADAPTIVE BRAKE is another new development in the area of running gear technology. This is based on the technology of the S-Class and provides additional support functions for even more safety and comfort. Examples include Start-Off Assist for uphill gradients, priming the braking system in critical situations and light contact to dry the brake discs in wet conditions.

Output of the supercharged four-cylinder engines increased by up to 13 percent

With a remarkable boost in output by up to 13 percent and an increase of around 18 percent in torque, the engines also do more than their bit to create the lively nature of the new C-Class. The four and six-cylinder units not only excel with powerful responsiveness, but also contribute to the excellent ride comfort of the Saloon with their improved smoothness.

Mercedes-Benz has paid particular attention to further development of the four-cylinder engines. In the petrol range, the output of the entry-level C 180 KOMPRESSOR has increased from the previous 105 kW to 115 kW, with maximum torque improved by 4.5 percent from 220 to 230 Newton metres. The C 200 KOMPRESSOR develops 15 kW more than before. It has an output of 135 kW and generates its maximum torque of 250 Newton metres from 2800 rpm. These modified engines considerably improve the performance and fuel consumption of the four-cylinder models. When accelerating from standstill to 100 km/h, the C 200 KOMPRESSOR is 0.5 seconds faster than its predecessor. Improvements in fuel consumption are equally impressive: the C 180 KOMPRESSOR consumes 0.3 litres per 100 kilometres less than before, while the combined fuel consumption of the C 200 KOMPRESSOR has been reduced by 0.5 litres per 100 kilometres.

Fuel consumption of the four-cylinder CDI engines reduced by 0.3 litres

Further development of the four-cylinder units was also the main focus for the diesel engines. The engineers in Stuttgart have made further improvements to the engine, turbocharger and common-rail direct injection, modifying more than 90 components. As a result of these measures the new C 200 CDI has eleven percent more output than the preceding model, with 100 kW versus the previous 90 kW. The C 220 CDI develops a peak output of 125 kW (previously 110 kW), and generates a torque of 400 Newton metres from 2000 rpm -- around 18 percent more than before. Fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 0.3 litres per 100 kilometres: in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), the C 200 CDI and C 220 CDI are able to travel 100 kilometres on just 6.1 litres of fuel.

The modern V6-engines in the C-Class range remain unchanged, with a choice of three petrol units developing 150 kW, 170 kW and 200 kW.

The six-cylinder turbo diesel engine of the new C 320 CDI has an output of 165 kW. All four-cylinder petrol models in the new C-Class are equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission, whilst a six-speed transmission featuring AGILITY CONTROL gearshift is also available. The petrol V6 range utilise 7G-TRONIC, the world’s only seven-speed automatic transmission.

The latest Mercedes inventions ensure maximum safety

During the course of its development, the new C-Class successfully passed more than 100 crash tests, including the particularly demanding, in-house impact tests of which some go well beyond the legal requirements. Passing these is a precondition for the highest accolade in automobile safety: the Mercedes star.

Occupant protection is based on an intelligently designed bodyshell, 70 percent of which consists of high-strength and ultra high-strength steel. Compared to the previous series, Mercedes-Benz has enlarged the deformation zones even further and improved energy flows. The front-end structure of the new C-Class has four independently acting impact levels, which enable forces to be distributed over a wide area while bypassing the passenger cell.

The safety technology in the interior has been complemented with the very latest protection systems. Seven airbags are included as standard equipment: two adaptive airbags for the driver and front passenger, a kneebag for the driver (ECE only), two sidebags in the front seat backrests and rear airbags. Two large windowbags extend from the A- to the C-pillar during a side impact. The driver, front passenger and the passengers on the outer rear seats also benefit from belt tensioners and belt force limiters as standard.
The standard head restraints operate on the NECK PRO principle: during a rear-end collision the padded surfaces are pushed forward within milliseconds to support the heads of the driver and front passenger at an early stage. This significantly reduces the risk of a whiplash injury.

Mercedes-Benz has developed flashing brake lights (ECE only) as a major help in reducing rear-end collisions, and these are also standard equipment in the new C-Class. If the driver needs to brake hard at speeds in excess of 50 km/h, the brake lights flash rapidly to warn drivers following behind.

PRE-SAFE®is another special feature of the new Mercedes Saloon. This preventive occupant protection system (optional) is linked to active safety systems such as ESP® and Brake Assist, and is able to recognise critical driving manoeuvres at a very early stage. If the C-Class is in danger of crashing as a result of heavy under or oversteering, or if the driver needs to brake very heavily in a dangerous situation, PRE-SAFE® activates certain systems as a precaution to prepare the vehicle and its occupants for an impending accident. Accordingly the passive safety phase does not begin when the impact has already occurred, but before an impending collision.

The Intelligent Light System developed by Mercedes-Benz is also available in this vehicle class for the first time. Powerful bi-xenon headlamps provide five different lighting functions suited to typical driving and weather conditions: country mode, motorway mode, enhanced foglamps, the Active Light System and cornering lights. This is yet another important contribution to safer driving in poor visibility, courtesy of Mercedes-Benz

Interior design "cast from a single mould"

When developing the cockpit, Mercedes designers took their lead from the sporty sector and included clearly laid-out dial instruments such as may be found in roadsters or coupés. Silver-coloured bezels, black dial faces, white markings and glowing orange needles perfectly combine form with function for a high value impression and easy legibility.

Equally clearly laid out and well-arranged, the two-tone dashboard and centre console of the new C-Class form a harmonious unit in line with the "design cast from a single mould" principle. The same applies to the integration of the colour display at the upper centre of the dashboard. This is perfectly positioned within the driver’s line of vision, but can also be covered or folded away as required, without switching off the radio, navigation system or other units linked to the display. If the pivoting cover of the display aperture is closed, the infotainment units continue to operate.

New control concept for clarity and comfort

The central colour display is part of the new control and display concept which the new C-Class has adopted from the luxury-class Mercedes models. Its major advantage is rapid access to frequently used functions, which means that the driver does not need to relearn, is able to maintain familiar habits and feels at home immediately. All the control and display elements necessary and important during a journey are located in the cockpit, i.e. in immediate proximity to the driver.

In the same way, linking the standard multifunction steering wheel with the instrument cluster is an important precondition for rapid access to a wide range of information and functions in the driver’s direct line of vision. Other functions such as infotainment are shown by the display at the centre of the dashboard. The driver and front passenger are able to control the radio, navigation system or telephone by using a controller on the centre console, or access the main menus using direct selection keys.

COMAND provides voice operation, a music server and DVD navigation

The Audio 20, Audio 50 APS (Auto Pilot System) and COMAND (Cockpit Management & Data System) APS are a range of newly developed optional infotainment units for C-Class passengers. They all feature a keypad for entering telephone numbers and radio frequencies, as well as a Bluetooth interface which wirelessly connects the mobile phone to the hands-free system. In the Audio 50 APS, the route guidance information – some of it as a visually attractive automatic junction zoom display - is shown by means of arrows on the fixed colour display (4.9-inch) in the dashboard. An integral 6-CD changer and the LINGUATRONIC voice control system are available on request.

The multimedia system COMAND APS offers even more functions than before in the new C-Class. One new feature is a nationwide navigation system whose data are stored on a hard disc (30 gigabytes). The high-resolution maps are shown on a colour display (7-inch) which pivots away and disappears beneath a cover at the touch of a button. Other functions of COMAND APS include a music server with a four-gigabyte memory, a DVD-player for video and audio, and the LINGUATRONIC voice control system, which Mercedes-Benz has likewise improved further: the driver no longer needs to spell out the names of countries, towns or roads, but is able to speak them as whole words. The voice control system is just as convenient when selecting radio stations or entries in the telephone directory.

The C-Class is the bestseller in the Mercedes lineup

The new C-Class Salon replaces a model series of which more than 1.4 million units have been sold since spring 2000. All in all, Mercedes-Benz has delivered more than two million of the Saloon, Estate and Sports Coupé models in the previous C-Class to customers all over the world.

This makes the C-Class the bestseller in the Mercedes-Benz passenger car range. Germany is the largest market for the C-Class, accounting for around 30 percent of worldwide sales.

Australian market introduction

Australian product specifications and pricing for the new C-Class will be announced in the coming months. All technical data that follows is according to European specifications, with Australian specifications to be confirmed.

The New Audi S8

Dynamism and elegance
Audi S8

Its predecessor was already a sporty luxury saloon with an exceptionally individual character. The new Audi S8, launched in Australia in December 2006, is set to continue this legacy and develop it further, with the objective of setting new standards in its class.

Sportiness is to be found in the genes of all Audi models. In the case of the
S models, however, it is a declared principle, combined with comfort, aesthetics, elegance and uncompromising quality. The Audi S8, born from a fascination for technology, combines all these characteristics to produce a high degree of passion and superiority.

Drivetrain

For the first time in its history, Audi is putting a ten-cylinder engine on to the road. The long-stroke V10 capitalises on the expertise behind the Lamborghini Gallardo super sports car, yet is a completely new development in certain key areas – one of its most important innovations being FSI petrol direct injection.

The S8 engine has a displacement of 5,204 cc, from which it produces an output of 331kW at 7,000 rpm and 540 Nm of torque. 90 percent of this power is already available at 2,300 rpm. The Audi luxury saloon consequently achieves the road performance of a high-calibre sports car. The Audi S8 sprints from a standstill to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, and effortlessly reaches a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited).

Thanks among other things to its compact design, the ten-cylinder concept is ideal for achieving a sporty performance. FSI technology, which uses the principle of homogeneous combustion, enables a high compression ratio. Audi has drawn here on the extensive experience it enjoys in the field of motorsport.

The R8 racing car, a pioneer of direct injection, took part in the Le Mans 24 Hours five times, winning on four of those occasions – proof indeed of the efficiency and high performance of this technology.
The advantages are clear to see:

very spontaneous response, short reaction time

shorter shift points, quick gear changes

sporty, throaty sound when accelerating

beefy torque curve even at low engine speeds

sporty behaviour thanks to engine speeds up to 7,000 rpm

perfect synthesis of sporty driving pleasure and comfort on long journeys

The S8 is equipped with a six-speed tiptronic transmission. The final ratio of this automatic transmission is lower than on the A8, its management is optimised to change gear more dynamically. In typical Audi style, the new S8 also transmits its power to the road by means of quattro permanent four-wheel drive. In its new generation, with asymmetric/dynamic torque split, it makes the dynamic character of the luxury saloon even more agile. A centre differential distributes 40 percent of the power to the front and 60 percent to the rear wheels. This slight emphasis on the rear end ensures particularly dynamic handling.

Chassis

Like the A8, the S8 also relies on adaptive air suspension including adaptive damper control and aluminium chassis components. However, the setup on this model is exceptionally sporty in character and even slightly stiffer than on the adaptive air suspension – sport version familiar from the A8, which lowers the body by up to 20 millimetres depending on mode. The steering has a more direct ratio which ensures better handling. The Audi S8 is fitted as standard with cast aluminium wheels of S design. These are of size 9 J x 20 and shod with wide tyres of size 265/35.

The four discs of the 18-inch brake system are ventilated and generously dimensioned. The optional ceramic brakes, which are already offered for the
A8 W12, are a special feature available for the S8.

Ceramic brakes have significant advantages over steel discs. They are less susceptible to heat fading and last for up to 300,000 kilometres – about four times as long as steel discs. The car’s handling also benefits from the ceramic discs’ lower weight – they are around 5 kilograms or 50 percent lighter than steel discs.

Body

The innovative aluminium body, built using the Audi Space Frame ASF principle, provides the high-strength basis for the supreme dynamism of the Audi S8. The closed space frame imbues the body with outstanding characteristics. The static torsional rigidity, a critical measure of dynamic potential, is around 60 percent higher than on the previous model.

At the same time, the new S8 has the lightest bodyshell in the entire luxury segment – its weight is around 50 percent lower than that of an equivalent steel body. This advantage is doubly valuable, benefiting both dynamism and economy.

Design

A glance at the outside is enough to see that the S8 gives an unmistakeable promise of performance. The car’s athletic exterior design translates its dynamism into a clear and elegant formal idiom and emphasises the exceptional position that the brand’s sporty top model enjoys in the luxury class.

The front end of the Audi S8 is adorned with the single-frame grille bearing the S8 badge and comprising vertical struts with a chrome-look finish. Three flat air inlets accentuate the front apron; the large inlets under the headlights feature a honeycomb grille.

Down the sides, badges on the front wings, door handles with aluminium trim strips and aluminium-look mirror housings are indications of the exceptional status of the S8.

The S8 on the tail, a rear spoiler integrated into the luggage compartment lid, a subtle light-refracting edge in the apron and an exhaust system with four oval tailpipes complete the list of modifications.

The door sill trims are adorned with S8 emblems, the inlays are in brushed aluminium and carbon. The leather multifunction sports steering wheel has colour-contrasting stitching and the S emblem, the shift paddles have an aluminium-look finish. Aluminium-look trim also embellishes the selector lever knob, the electromechanical parking brake and air vent surrounds.
The needles on the instrument dials are in white, their scales in light grey and their digits in italic script. The sports seats with Valcona leather upholstery are finished in a two-colour look.

Equipment

The A8 already boasts a luxurious standard equipment specification. This includes a leather multifunction steering wheel, deluxe automatic air conditioning, a luggage compartment lid with power-assisted closing, cruise control, electrically adjustable front seats and an electromechanical parking brake.

In addition to these items, the S8 will boast a wealth of other comfort and convenience features such as the keyless driver authorisation system advanced key, double glazing for the windows, automatically dipping and electrically folding exterior mirrors, heating for the rear seats, a DVD navigation system and a Bose surround sound system with CD changer, Valcona leather and a leather-covered centre console and door armrests.

The standard equipment of the S8 also includes the innovative lighting technology adaptive light with LED daytime running lights. In this case, the xenon plus headlights are combined with static turning lights and dynamic cornering lights, as well as with special daytime running lights. Each consisting of five white light-emitting diodes, these only consume a minimum amount of energy.

One particular highlight that is standard for the S8 in Australia is the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System. The fully digital system from the Danish high-end manufacturer integrates 14 speakers, each energised by its own output stage. Two amplifiers provide more than 1,000 watts of power. The front tweeters use what is known as Acoustic Lens Technology, and act as point sound sources.

Audi S6

A refined flow of power in conjunction with superlative comfort and an elegantly understated appearance: this is the new Audi S6. It is the sporty top version in the luxury-class family of models comprising the Audi A6 saloon and A6 Avant, which took the market by storm following their launch in 2004 and have since garnered countless accolades worldwide from both customers and experts within the trade.

Audi has always used the letter "S" to denote its unrelenting quest for sportiness. In the S models, sportiness is the overriding principle, flanked by comfort, aesthetic appeal, elegance and uncompromising quality. All S models traditionally feature very high-performance engines, quattro permanent four-wheel drive and a distinctive S-specific design. The new Audi S6, the latest product to embody this philosophy, is upholding and building on this legacy in order to redefine the benchmark yet again in its segment.

Drivetrain

In response to the challenge to deliver supreme performance that can always be summoned up with ultimate refinement, the new Audi S6 will be powered by a newly developed ten-cylinder V-configuration engine. This engine, a virtually identical version of which is likewise fitted in the new Audi S8, makes maximum use of its resources: from a displacement of 5.2 litres, it develops an output of
320 kW at 6,800 rpm, and its peak torque of 540 Nm is achieved between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm.

More than 500 Nm are available between 2,500 and 5,500 rpm, meaning that the lightweight 220-kilogram engine guarantees superior pulling power in every driving situation.

This pioneering engine gives the Audi S6 the road performance of a high-calibre Grand Touring.

The Audi S6 saloon is capable of racing from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. The speed is governed electronically when the needle reaches 250 km/h.

Thanks among other things to its compact design, the ten-cylinder concept is ideal for achieving a sporty performance. FSI direct injection technology, which uses the principle of homogeneous combustion, enables a high compression ratio. Audi has drawn here on the extensive experience it enjoys in the field of motor sport.

The R8 racing car, a pioneer of direct injection, took part in the Le Mans 24 Hours five times, winning on four of those occasions – proof indeed of the efficiency and high performance of this technology.

The advantages of the Audi S6 are clear to see:

Substantial engine torque at low revs

Sporty behaviour thanks to engine speeds of up to 7,000 rpm

Highly spontaneous response, short reaction time

Shorter shift points, swifter gear changes

Typical, gutsy sound when accelerating

Perfect synthesis of sporty driving pleasure and comfortable long-distance suitability

The S6 is equipped with a six-speed tiptronic transmission. The ratios of this widely used transmission are shorter than on the A6, and its management function has been optimised for even swifter gear changes.

The new S6, too, naturally transmits its power to the road by means of quattro permanent four-wheel drive.

In its new generation, with asymmetric/dynamic torque split, quattro makes the already decidedly dynamic character of this car even more agile. A centre differential normally distributes 40 percent of the power to the front and
60 percent to the rear wheels. This slight emphasis on the rear end ensures particularly dynamic handling.

If the surface conditions change – for instance if they become wet or slippery, or if the car is driven onto a different type of road surface – this purely mechanical differential responds without any delay; depending on the requirements at any given moment, it can divert up to 85 percent of power to the rear wheels or as much as 65 percent to the front wheels.

The drivetrain concept of the new S6 constantly ensures that the immense power of the V10 engine is translated efficiently into propulsion on the road – where other cars are electronically governed, the S6 streaks ahead in unruffled style without any restrictive intervention by the engine and brake management systems.

Chassis

As a reflection of its explicitly sporty character, the suspension settings of the S6 have been made firmer, even compared with the A6 sports suspension, but at the same time this assures a high standard of comfort for long-distance driving. The Audi S6 is always conspicuously nimble; meanwhile, driving stability and traction have been further optimised.

The principal components of the chassis feature intelligent lightweight aluminium construction, resulting in decisively lower unsprung masses.

The Audi S6 is equipped ex works with 19-inch cast aluminium wheels of a 5-arm wing design. The wide tyres have the format 265/35 R19. An 18-inch brake system assures supreme braking performance and is resistant to fading even under high loads. It features four very large-size ventilated brake discs.

The servotronic steering has been configured for a more direct response than that on the basic A6 model.

Design

The models in Audi's S range have traditionally epitomised consistent sports appeal. The S6 cuts a supremely athletic figure out on the roads – yet is free from any hint of aggression. The most striking differences compared with the A6 are to be found at the front end.
The eye-catching single-frame grille displays the S6 emblem, and in this instance has double-design vertical aluminium-look struts. There is an air inlet beneath the grille. A spoiler lip at the front end of the car provides additional negative lift.

Another innovation in the front bumper is a pioneering development: the separate LED daytime running lights, each of which consists of five white light-emitting diodes and consumes only a minimal amount of energy. When these light strips are switched on, the effect is utterly distinctive: they make it incredibly easy to identify the new Audi S6, and the low-down position of the daytime running lights gives the car a dynamically flat appearance. Xenon plus headlights are provided as standard; Audi adaptive light, the dynamic cornering light, is optional. The rear light units incorporate LED brake lights as standard.

The wings are flared by 14 millimetres in the area of the wheel arches. The door trim strips are likewise of wider dimensions, to accentuate the “S” characteristics, and are painted in the body colour. Other striking differentiating features are door sill trims bearing the S6 logo at all four doors, the rear spoiler integrated subtly into the luggage compartment lid – aluminium-look exterior mirrors, the V10 emblem at the front beneath the side turn indicators, and an S6 logo on the rear end. The vehicle's tail end also displays a colour-contrasting diffuser in the bumper and the four ellipsoidal tailpipes of the exhaust system.

Equipment

In the same way as the body's styling, the interior of the new Audi S6, too, reflects a character of dynamic elegance and high quality – from the organically flowing driving area to the integrated MMI operating concept.

A new generation of sports seats is fitted. They have integral head restraints and pronounced lateral supports, and are upholstered in Alcantara/Leather. The front seats are electrically adjustable in multiple directions as standard, and include a lumbar support.

The three-spoke multifunction leather sports steering wheel with the S logo is trimmed in smooth leather and displays a colour-contrasting double seam with a special stitch pattern.
The shift paddles, which are mounted to the steering wheel (in other words, they move as it is turned), have an aluminium-look finish. The selector lever has an aluminium finish and is trimmed in smooth leather.

The trim inserts are in carbon. The material on the instrument panel represents a further innovation in the S6: it correspondingly exhibits an anthracite-coloured metallic surface characteristic. Anthracite is also the predominant colour featured on the other sections of the instrument panel. The centre console, on the other hand, is in black.

The Driver Information System with 3.5-inch colour display has an additional digital speedometer in the new S6. The MMI Multi Media Interface, which has a high performance yet is also straightforward and intuitive to use, provides information via a high-resolution 7-inch colour display. The MMI furthermore integrates the extended-specification radio system with double tuner and the DSP sound system with ten speakers and a CD changer in the glove box.

Safety

Whereas the high standard of active safety offered by the new Audi S6 stems principally from its superior engine power, pioneering quattro permanent four-wheel drive and ESP with two-stage deactivation, the sporty top model in the
A6 range also boasts a full complement of passive safety systems. This model comes complete with a package of restraint systems that are perfectly matched to the highly rigid aluminium body, including two full-size front airbags, side airbags for the front seats and large-area Audi sideguard curtain head airbags. Side airbags for the rear seats are available as an optional extra. All five three-point belts in the Audi S6 of course operate in conjunction with belt force limiters. There are belt tensioners for the front seats as standard. Audi backguard provides protection in the case of a rear-end impact.
